The Media and Audience Engagement Specialist supports the promotion of the research, education, practice, accomplishments, events and key individuals of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health to a variety of audiences and stakeholders in line with the School’s Communications and Marketing strategy. Reporting to the Director for Audience and Stakeholder Engagement, the position is based within the Audience Reach and Engagement team on the Communications and Marketing Team, in the Office of External Affairs (OEA).
The Media and Audience Engagement Specialist promotes the School’s work to national and global public health media outlets and is also responsible for sharing information with internal audiences. The Specialist serves as the School’s frontline media contact to field/respond to incoming reporter inquiries to connect journalists with faculty experts, coordinating interviews, media visits and in-studio interviews. The Specialist is responsible for circulating daily media placements on the School’s work, posting press releases to the website, and sharing School news internally and externally.
The Specialist also plays a critical role within the School in terms of internal communications, working to keep the School’s faculty, staff, students and other stakeholders informed of events, research and news. This position involves day-to-day management of internal communications channels, including e-mail communications, daily news updates and event promotion. The Specialist will also promote news about faculty, students and research to external outlets such as to public health association newsletters and Johns Hopkins University outlets.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Media and Public Relations
- Serve as the frontline/first media contact for the department to field and route incoming reporter inquiries.
- Track and disseminate media placements about the School, its research and spokespeople to generate the School’s “In the News” daily morning report.
- Post and distribute news releases to external press release platforms and School website; assist in the targeted distribution of press releases and media advisories.
- Serve as a media escort at the School managing on-site and off-site interviews and staff media visits; help produce and staff the Bloomberg TV and Radio public health experts series.
- Promote special School events, symposia and conferences to key audiences.
- With the C&M team and communications colleagues at the School, gather School news to submit to key public health outlets.
- Field incoming media requests, help to arrange reporter interviews for faculty experts, and track media placements.
- Coordinate and collaborate on media opportunities and news releases with the network of School communications associates.
- Develop media contacts and help maintain global public health media lists.
- Follow current events and public health news and trends, topics to suggest pitches with School experts, story ideas, and other content.
- Obtain coverage in public health media and Baltimore media outlets and University and public health newsletters, including the Johns Hopkins University HUB newsletter and the ASPPH Friday letter.
- Assist the Director to organize regular group media trainings for faculty.
- Other duties as assigned.
Internal Communications and Audience Engagement
- Closely coordinate with the Director for Audience and Stakeholder Engagement and the Associate Director of Audience Development to meet the School and Dean’s office internal communications needs.
- Populate internal communications platforms with accurate, clear and concise written content.
- Manage requests for network-wide communications from School leadership, faculty and students via e-mail; serve as primary editor for e-mails to staff and faculty; help maintain Schoolwide email archives.
- Collaborate frequently with C&M team, faculty, and communications associates to promote new faculty research, accolades, events, and other news; assist in populating the School calendar with events and news.
- Conduct specialized communications and duties special events and conferences, as assigned; Assist with collaborations for special event coverage and stakeholder engagement opportunities.
- Play a role in incident command/crisis communications, as needed.
Bachelor's degree in related field.
Two (2) years related experience.
Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *
Two (2) years’ work experience in successful media relations campaigns preferred, ideally for a matrixed national or global organization.
- Five (5) years related work experience in journalism/public information/public relations/media relations/internal communications preferred.
- Strong interest and experience in communications/public relations with a background in public health, scientific writing or journalism.
- Ability to reach out to internal and external stakeholders and audiences to gather intelligence.
- Stay abreast of relevant public and global health news, developments and events.
- Candidates with knowledge of international and national media outlets, a plus.
- Candidates with a demonstrated ability to promote compelling news and stories with both media and influencers, preferred.
- Experience in higher education a plus.

- Ability to understand and synthesize and distill large amounts of information and generate key messages.
- Ability to work independently as well as on a collaborative team.
- Qualified candidate must be able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information, must be flexible, professional, and may occasionally be on call after hours as needed.
- Some travel may be required across the University campus and to external events and locations locally, nationally or internationally.
