Do’s and Don’ts of a TV Interview

Research has actually shown that the longer a communications professional works in the public relations realm, the greater the likelihood that they will need to face a news camera.The question then is – Will You Be Prepared? Will you know how to coach your colleagues or leaders to do a media interview? How can you encourage their media participation if you are unsure of the process yourself?
In this on-camera workshop, you’ll learn to confidently represent your brand on-camera, or be the media coach your colleagues need. You will learn not only how to prepare for a TV interview, but also the on-camera techniques needed to navigate a broadcast interview. Interview topics provided in advance by those enrolled will be utilized for each on camera interview scenario, and immediate on-camera feedback will be provided by reviewing portion of the taped interview segments. If you want to learn how experienced communicators have tackled the Do’s and Don’ts for TV appearances, then join us for what will be an exciting and rewarding learning experience.
- The importance of television interview skills in today’s media landscape
- How to look your best on camera (e.g., posture, makeup, body language, dress)
- Nut & bolts of any interview – how to develop and deliver key messages
- How to answer reporters’ questions and navigate their expectations
- Ways to control the interview/what to avoid

During Dan’s 30+ years in public relations, he has served as a media relations instructor for government and private sector communication professionals. During his national spokesperson role with the U.S. Justice Department, he was interviewed each week by national news media representatives, and served as an agency media relations training expert at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Aurora, Colorado. Now with Erickson Living, Dan serves as the company’s chief spokesperson and oversees a team of regional communication professionals responsible for integrated communication support, including social media administration and crisis communications. Additionally, as time permits, he continues to help enhance the media relations expertise of government officials and others. For example, last year he instructed a two-day workshop which enabled Franklin County, Pennsylvania officials to increase their public and media relations knowledge and news media interview skills.

As the regional director of media and public relations for the largest healthcare provider in the Maryland-D.C. region, Debra oversees all external media and PR efforts for MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, MedStar Good Samaritan, MedStar Harbor and MedStar Union Memorial Hospitals. Drawing on an extensive media background, Debra created the MedStar Television Network, directs a series of live interactive webcasts, serves as the hospitals’ spokesperson, and conducts physician media training. With 30-plus years’ experience in print journalism, broadcast news and public relations, Debra is an Emmy-nominated professional who has been recognized with such honors as the National Headliner Award and a Clarion for investigative journalism, two Asters, several Telly and MarCom awards for public relations videos, and is a Best in Show and Gold Winner recipient of the National Healthcare Marketing Report awards. Debra launched her television work as a reporter for the national Fox Television network show, America’s Most Wanted, at WTTG in D.C. and then spent eight years at WMAR, the ABC News affiliate in Baltimore.
Senior Regional Communication Manager, Erickson Living
As Senior Regional Communications Manager, Jeff is responsible for external communications (including public relations & social media) & internal communications support at five Erickson Living communities: Oak Crest in Baltimore, MD, Windsor Run in Matthews, NC, Highland Springs in Dallas, TX, Eagle’s Trace in Houston, TX and Ashby Ponds in Ashburn, VA. As a senior member of an integrated communication team, Jeff routinely works with national and local news media representatives in securing widespread earned-media story placements. His diverse experience in being interviewed by reporters has included responding to critical incident situations, such as a Legionnaires’ case (2018) at Highland Spring and the impact on Eagle’s Trace caused by Hurricane Harvey last August. Jeff’s superior on-camera skills are also evident in his routine appearances on the Oak Crest Television Network, where he often interviews local political leaders.
