Five Tips
from our June Panel
The chapter's June program, The Changing Landscape for the Public Relations Profession, held on Thursday, June 18, featured Emily
Williams from the Obama Campaign and Wendy Harmon from the American
Red Cross with moderator David Harrison of Harrison Communications in
a panel discussion on the rapidly changing PR industry. Here are tips
from the conversation.
Be sure to allocate sufficient resources
for your social media efforts. Creating and managing a list of blogs,
for example, is comparable to maintaining the old Bacon's media list.
It takes time to build and manage.
Don't use social media because it's a shiny new object.
Examine your goals and then consider how the new tools can best serve
you.
Add video as a basic component of your communications
toolkit. Communicating with your target audience through YouTube is
easy and can be effective.
Strip the marketing-speak out of your social media
communications. Users see it immediately and usually regard it as inauthentic.
