BIM Awards Submission Deadlines: APRIL 23, Early Bird; MAY 7, Final

Be sure to submit your organization’s greatest success story for a PRSA-MD’s Best in Maryland award. But hurry because submissions must be received no later than 5 p.m. on May 7, or 5 p.m. on April 23 for early bird rates (that’s this Friday!).

Keep in mind that 25% of entries get pushed aside, not because they aren’t creative, effective and successful, but because they’re not well presented. Check out tips from the pros for vital ideas on creating a winning entry.

Chesapeake Conference Speakers to Include Google-Bid Insider and Emmy Award Winner

Be sure to arrive early on June 17 to hear technology entrepreneur Dave Troy deliver the morning keynote address at PRSA-MD’s 33rd Annual Chesapeake Conference. One of the principal players in Baltimore’s bid to bring Google’s ultra high-speed Internet trial to Baltimore, Dave will address the inspirational and creative efforts put forth by public/private organizations toward this end. He will discuss Baltimore’s PR, social media and buzz strategies, along with lessons learned. In addition, he will tell us why Baltimore is a good fit for Google Fiber, and when Google will reveal its decision.

Kicking off the second half of the conference will be local Emmy Award winner Lisa A. Shenkle, president of VERB! Communications and board member for Sail Baltimore. As the afternoon keynote speaker, Lisa will describe how the art and skills of public relations help her navigate political landmines and sensitivities associated with international ships visiting the Port of Baltimore. Discover how she overcomes challenges in scheduling press events, gets permission for the media to board vessels, and engages all parties for the greater mission of establishing goodwill between our country and others.

Breakout sessions include:

  • How media fragmentation is making it harder (and easier) than ever to reach your targets
  • Putting SEO to work: Writing with search engines in mind
  • Red flags of social media:  A legal perspective
  • Great marketing ROI for a lousy economy
  • Writing for the Web and social media
  • Media ethics
  • PR measurement
  • APR roundtable discussion
  • How “not to pitch the media” roundtable discussion

Don’t miss the boat! Register today for the Chesapeake Conference and Best In Maryland Awards on June 17 at the Sheraton Baltimore North Hotel in Towson. Follow updates and learn more about the Conference on our blog or Twitter stream. Click here to register.

See our chapter blog (More Than PR Basics) to find how you can use Delicious and other tools as a powerful publishing platform and why you need to be tagging. Michael’s slides are available on Slideshare and notes are also on Twitter #prsamd.

Correction: PR Internship at The Walters Art Museum

The last issue of WebNotes included an advertisement for a public relations intern at The Walters Art Museum this spring. In fact, the internship is not for the spring, but rather the summer or fall, 2010. The Walters seeks applications from undergraduate juniors and seniors, graduate students or recent graduates majoring in communications, public relations, marketing, arts management or administration, museum studies and English. Based on a system of supervised learning, the internships enable students to understand how a museum operates and how to relate this experience to academic and professional goals.

For more information, click here or contact John Shields at (410) 547-9000, ext 235 or jshields@thewalters.org.
