Case You Missed it: Crisis Communication Tips from Maroon
On February 25, John Maroon and Tim Richardson of Maroon PR
shared their expertise on crisis communications management. Maroon PR
specializes in sports PR and reputation management. Here are a few of
their tips:
- Always
be aware of the fact that, with the proliferation of smart phones,
flip cams, YouTube and Twitter, everyone is a reporter.
- Treat
the local media well—especially during a crisis. They're more inclined
to be fair to their own.
- The
time to plan is not when a crisis hits. Every organization, every
brand, should have some kind of crisis plan 'ready to go'. Time is
your enemy in a crisis, so be prepared.
- "No
comment" is a comment. And it conveys guilt. Instead, figure out a
way to comment and convey that more information is forthcoming.
- Be
honest. It's hard to recover from a lie because the press and the
public no longer trust you.
