Missed
our November Event, but Need to Know the Questions to Ask when Developing
a Social Media Strategy?
For those of you who wanted, but were unable, to attend our November
19 event with Chief Creative Officer Sean Carton of idfive,
here are some takeaways from his presentation, "10 Questions To Ask
When Developing A Social Media Strategy."
Think
of social media as a trend evolving from a chain of communications technologies
dating back to the advent of postal delivery in Persia, circa 550 B.C.
Seen in this light, e-mail, Twitter and Facebook belong to the same
family as the telephone, telegraph, and more. Don't be scared-they're
nothing but tools!
- Ask
WHY you want to use social media. (Don't be surprised if your question
invokes a puzzled look on the respondent's face.)
- Ask
WHAT kind of social media will best serve your purpose.
- Determine
WHO will be responsible for maintaining the social media sites. The
"who" is not a technology issue (i.e., the IT department vs. the communications
dept.); it's an organizational issue, and many decision makers don't
understand that social media is not free. The issue at hand is one
of time, so whoever handles social media is going to have less time
for other media.
- Ask
HOW you're going to measure the success of your program. (Note that
some executives tend to demand success measures for social media,
but not for traditional media-as though traditional media necessarily
reveals clear measures.)

as we look ahead to next year's premier event. Each submitter was entered
into a drawing, and a winner has been chosen: David Harrison, Harrison
Communications. Congratulations, David!
