PRSA-MD

Dear PRSA Maryland members,

Happy New Year! As our Chapter welcomes 2010, I look forward to introducing you to our exciting monthly programs planned for the year, as well as to our educational and promotional opportunities.

In June, our annual Chesapeake Conference will this year again be combined with the Best in Maryland Awards - offering a full day of dynamic information sessions along with our Awards program, recognizing the best public relations work that local agencies, independents, and organizations have put forward this past year.

In addition, we welcome back our accreditation workshop for APR candidates. The workshop sessions will begin in February, so there's still time to join!

PRSA-MD is committed to educating new and future PR professionals, as well as providing a forum for seasoned professionals to share ideas, tips, and tactics - plus, we're a networking opportunity for all. Our $1,000 Kathleen Kelly Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded to a current college student pursuing a public relations career, while our New Professionals Group offers networking opportunities for its members. For seasoned professionals, our monthly programs as well as the Chesapeake Conference are excellent opportunities to brush up on skills or to learn new ones - we strive to offer as topics a mix of standard PR skills and new opportunities, such as social media.

As a member of PRSA-Maryland, you are a part of a group of over 300 of our region's leading public relations professionals. Take the opportunity to attend any of our events - whether a monthly program or our Conference - become a volunteer, or get your name in front of this prestigious group by becoming a sponsor. Regardless of how you are involved, I look forward to meeting and working with you throughout the coming year!

Best wishes for a successful year,

Laura LaChapelle

President 2010

Volunteers Needed for Chesapeake Conference and Best in Maryland Awards
If you can write press releases, create PowerPoint presentations, book and confirm speakers, or meet and greet peers and other communications professionals, then PRSA-MD needs you.

PRSA-MD needs volunteers to help plan the 2010 Chesapeake Conference and Best in Maryland Awards event. This is your chance to put your mark on the Chapter's most prestigious and well-attended event of the year. Volunteering for the Chapter is a great way to meet other PR and communications professionals, hone a skill, make important contacts, or put one of your many skills to good use. What's more, you'll have fun and receive recognition for your efforts.

Agency Profile
Here's just one company that supports the Maryland Chapter--over and above our regular Chapter dues. Please see our list of sponsors and patronize these companies if you have a public relations need.

Sawmill Marketing Public Relations
Sawmill Marketing Public Relations established a social media practice in 2007, making it one of the first PR firms in the nation to address what at the time was a new practice area for communications agencies. Rather than treat it as a separate division, Sawmill integrates social media with traditional communications programs, offering a wide range of public relations services for regional and national clients whose marketing situations include product launches and repositionings, new market development and expansions, lead generation, customer recruitment and retention, and corporate reputation enhancement and management.

The Baltimore-based public relations firm was formed in 1995 by Susan Anthony, who currently leads it with agency partner Jeffrey A. Davis, APR. Before forming Sawmill, Susan spent 20 years with national marketing communications agencies, including Carton Donofrio Partners in Baltimore, where she served as Executive Vice President, Director of Public Relations. Her broad public relations experience includes all facets of marketing public relations, with a particular expertise in designing and executing media relations programs as key business development strategies.

Jeff Davis has more than 20 years of news media and national public relations experience, including a background as a reporter for daily newspapers in Ohio, New Jersey and Maryland. He has extensive expertise in corporate positioning and reputation management, particularly in media relations, media training, crisis communications and social media. Jeff authors a blog on trends in public relations and is a regular speaker on public relations, particularly in the area of social media. He is a former president of PRSA-MD.
